Winter 2012 Studio Classes

The Lynden Sculpture Garden offers studio classes for young people in eight-week sessions from September through May. These classes focus on three-dimensional artmaking--though we will also do plenty of painting, drawing and collaging--and make use of Lynden’s special resources: the collection of monumental sculpture and 40 acres of park, lake and woodland. Taught by experienced art educators, classes combine creative expression with an age-appropriate understanding of media, processes and techniques.

New this semester! Our partner Alliance Française will offer Les Amis, a beginning French class for children aged 7-12 on Saturday mornings. This is a perfect opportunity for your child to learn French while their younger sibling is in the art studio, or to make it a morning at Lynden with Les Amis followed by Art Explorers. Details below.

Eight-Week Winter Session

Tuesday classes run January 17 – March 6
Thursday classes run January 19 – March 8
Saturday classes run January 21 – March 10

Make It New
Tuesdays, 4 pm – 5:30 pm
Ages: 6 - 9
$138 / $114 members
We are surrounded by everyday items we no longer use. Employing a variety of processes, we will transform these abandoned objects into functional sculptures—things we can use. Cast reclaimed crayons into sculptures you can draw with, design assemblages that double as lampshades, and make pop-up artist books with pull-strip animations from found papers. With a focus on creative, open-ended design, this class inspires the maker within.

Garden Animals
Thursdays, 1:15- 2:15pm
Ages: 3 - 5
$92 / $76 members
Taking Lynden’s collection of animal sculptures as one starting point, and stories about animals as another, we will use paint, clay and mixed media collage to explore our favorite animals.

Sculptor’s Process II
Thursdays, 4 pm- 5:30 pm
Ages: 9 -12
$138 / $114 members
The process of making sculpture is a mix of creative invention and learned technique. Drawing on Lynden's collection we’ll explore the methods, materials, and ideas that artists use to create sculpture. Projects include wax modeling, kinetic whirligig sculptures, and carving from vermiculite-plaster block. Deepen your understanding of three-dimensional artmaking as you develop your artistic voice. (New students welcome--Sculptor’s Process I is not a prerequisite for this class.)

The Bremen Town Musicians & Other Tales
Saturdays, 9 am -10 am
Ages 4-7
$92 / $76 members
Join us for an hour of exploratory art projects inspired by stories. Starting with the Bremen Town Musicians (conveniently illustrated by a sculpture at Lynden) and moving through other favorites, we will use paint, clay, and mixed media collage to tell our own tales.

Art Explorers: Materials & Processes
Saturdays, 10:30 am-12:00 pm
Ages: 7 -12
$138 / $114 members
Young artists are inherently motivated to engage in self-directed exploration. This class introduces a range of materials and processes--ink drawing, clay building, found-object collage, wax modeling and sewing--and then asks students to investigate them with the freedom to design independently. We will discuss project ideas as a group and share our work at the end of each session.

Alliance Française at Lynden
Les Amis

Saturdays, 9-10 am
Ages: 7-12
$135
Visit http://afmilwaukee.org or call 414-431-0943 for registration and discounts; registration opens the week after Thanksgiving.

Based on a new pedagogical method, Smart Steps to French, children will discover French language and culture, basic grammar and vocabulary through interactive and stimulating stories, songs, projects and educational games. The emphasis is on oral communication, with the introduction to reading and writing of simple vocabulary. Textbook required.

Education Programs

In addition to its School Tours, the Lynden Sculpture Garden offers a range of education programs for schools and youth groups serving children and youth aged 6 through 18.

Some of these programs are offered year-round, and others are seasonal. All of them are designed to make use of Lynden’s collection of outdoor sculpture to enhance understanding of art and design, and particularly the intersection of art and nature that is Lynden’s unique feature. Programs teach young people to interpret their visual experiences, develop perception and visual discrimination, and to use their imaginations and creativity to solve problems and create original works.

Education programs meet several of Wisconsin’s Model Academic Standards for Art and Design Education. Participating classroom teachers will receive worksheets that contain simple discussion, research, and writing suggestions to inspire cross-curricular learning as preparation for or follow-up to their chosen program.

Lynden Sculpture Garden Education Programs are underwritten in part by a generous donation from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation's Kopmeier Family Fund.
