In the Garden: Summer Art + Nature Workshops at Lynden

Lynden’s summer art and nature workshops integrate our collection of monumental outdoor sculpture and temporary installations with the natural ecology of our hidden landscapes and unique habitats. Led by Lynden education staff, these standalone workshops are built around biweekly themes that suggest imaginative possibilities and promote intimate discoveries in art and nature through collaborative (but well-distanced) inquiry and hands-on artmaking. Workshop activities will change from day to day within each two-week period, so sign up for one or several. We invite you to make use of all of Lynden's 40 acres to create a joyful, all-senses-engaged, outdoor experience.

Safety Modifications

Lynden will follow regulations set by the North Shore Health Department and guidelines for summer programming outlined by the CDC. We are implementing new policies to protect the safety of all participants and staff.

• If your child or a member of the household is at higher risk for severe illness we advise you to seek advice from your primary care providers to assess risks and determine if attendance is acceptable.
• All programs will happen outdoors in areas closed to general visitors. (In the event of inclement weather, programs will move to a tented area, rescheduled, or canceled with a refund.)
• Workshops will be limited to eight participants and two educators (we may increase capacity if gating criteria permits).
• Social distancing will be practiced at all times.
• All participants are encouraged to wear masks. Extra masks will be available for those who need them.
• Hand sanitation stations will be available and frequent hand-washing practiced.

Tuition Waivers

Lynden is committed to making its programs available to all. Need-based tuition waivers are available. Contact Jeremy Stepien at (414) 446-8481 or jstepien@lyndensculpturegarden.org for an application form.

Session I | July 13-July 24 | Restoration

We will make the most of Lynden’s sculpture collection and landscape to explore the restorative possibilities of art and nature. A closer connection to nature through art making can help us repair relationships with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us. Activities during these two weeks might include preparing a make-believe “meal” from natural materials, planting and harvesting in our education garden, batiking with natural dyes, hiking through the labyrinth, or pond exploration. Registration for Session I workshops is closed.

Session II | July 27-August 7 | Connecting Places

Shared experiences can help us discover the value of the natural world. By slowing down to observe, making connections to specific places, and learning how to protect natural ecology, you build a foundation for continued engagement with and care for the natural world where you live. Activities during these two weeks might include searching for birds, digging up decomposers, learning how to raise monarch butterflies, and broadcasting native plant seeds by embedding them in a paper pulp sculpture. Registration for Session II workshops is closed.

This workshop is full. Contact Jeremy Stepien to be added to the waitlist.
In this series of three workshops, we’ll shape hardwood handles to make our own fixed-blade whittling knifes, learn safe carving techniques, and make walking sticks from buckthorn.

Session III | August 10-August 28 | Creative Communities

All knowledge is rooted in wonder, and what better place to cultivate our sense of wonder than in our own communities? We will explore the plants, animals, art, and people that coexist at Lynden, and we will consider how these communities interact and communicate. We’ll visit different habitats and use nature's shared stories to create imaginative works that inspire connection between us: shelters for creatures to inhabit, sculptures for wandering visitors to discover, planters to attract pollinators. Registration for Session III workshops is closed.
